Crane Clean Energy Center

The Crane Clean Energy Center (CCEC) will restore service to Three Mile Island's Unit 1 nuclear reactor, which operated safely and reliably for decades before Constellation retired the plant in 2019 due to economic conditions.

The effort comes as Governor Shapiro and state leaders are seeking additional clean electricity to power Pennsylvania’s growing economy. PJM, the regional grid operator that includes Pennsylvania, predicts an additional 10 gigawatts of electricity demand by 2029, which is equivalent to more than half of the total power use in the Commonwealth. Nuclear energy can reliably produce carbon-free energy 24/7 in all weather conditions without needing to be refueled for up to two years.

Launching the CCEC will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, provide hundreds of millions of dollars in state tax revenue, and generate more than 800 megawatts of carbon-free electricity. The CCEC will also support a new wave of technology investment and innovation, as manufacturing and digital economy firms are looking to establish operations in the Commonwealth.
