GOVERNOR WOLF TOURS WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA LABORERS' EDUCATION AND TRAINING CENTER SAXONBURG, PA - Governor Wolf today toured the Western Pennsylvania Laborers' Education and Training Center to highlight the importance of workforce training and careers in construction. "These laborers are receiving the proper training and certifications to perform their jobs, and using technology to make themselves even more of an asset to the contractors who rely on them to complete jobs effectively, efficiently, and safely," Governor Wolf said. "The laborers training center is an excellent blueprint for workforce training that is truly putting people to work across western Pennsylvania." Governor Wolf toured the center and met with 19 laborers training on OSHA regulations. Trainees learn about standards that should be adhered to on construction sites and how to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment. The 10-hour course is split into two six-hour days, per OSHA standards. "The apprentices at Western PA laborers are required to put in hundreds of hours of training to be best prepared to work on projects that build highways and maintain the state's infrastructure," Governor Wolf said. "It was a pleasure to meet these hard-working members of Pennsylvania's workforce." There are currently 34 courses at Western Pennsylvania offered to train laborers and apprentices in skills that give Pennsylvania contractors a competitive edge. Courses offered include topics such as concrete, asbestos, scaffolding, blueprint reading, and first aid. Last year, the Wolf Administration established the Apprenticeship Training Office (ATO) to provide outreach, education, and technical support to current and prospective apprenticeship program sponsors and apprentices. Since its inception, the ATO has added 2,610 new apprentices and 81 new registered apprenticeship occupations statewide. Pennsylvania currently has 15,208 apprentices and 750 registered apprenticeship programs.

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Building & Construction Trades Council

Thank you for visiting the web page of the Pennsylvania State Building & Construction Trades Council. The unionized construction industry is very unique, and we are proud to be the organization that leads the way when it comes to standing up for what is best for our members...and what is best for our communities.

Throughout our extremely large and diverse state, it is the members of the Pennsylvania Building Trades that create and maintain the infrastructure in the Commercial and Industrial Industries, which includes office buildings, hospitals, universities, schools, libraries, stadiums, bridges and highways, warehouses, power generation facilities, refineries and chemical plants that make our state such a wonderful place to live and do business. It is these same members of the Building Trades that tirelessly give back to their communities by volunteering their time to organizations that make life better for those less fortunate. We go beyond the call of duty to raise the standard of living for people in our communities.

The work of the unionized construction trades speaks for itself. Our apprenticeship training programs are second to none, and no one can compete with the level of skilled craftsmanship that our journeymen and women bring to the job site.
