DGS announces new website to help state contractors comply with PA law requiring verification of employee citizenship.

§  DGS announces new website to help state contractors comply with PA law requiring verification of employee citizenship.

§  The state Department of General Services on Wednesday announced it has launched a new website to assist contractors, subcontractors and state and local government bodies bidding public works projects in meeting the requirements of the Public Works Employment Verification Act, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2013.

§  The act, which became law on July 5 this year, requires contractors and subcontractors working on public works projects to verify the employment eligibility of each new employee through the federal government’s E-Verify system.

§  The intent of the law is to prevent contractors using non-U.S. citizen employees from participating with public works projects. According to proponents of the law, E-Verify is a fast, free, highly accurate online system by which employers can quickly determine if potential employees are eligible to work in the United States.

§  The E-Verify system is based on Social Security numbers and can provide online proof of employability within minutes.

§  The new DGS website provides preliminary information including a draft copy of the Statement of Policy (scheduled for publication in the PA Bulletin on Dec. 29, 2012) outlining the department’s administration and enforcement of the act, the verification form required by the act and a link to the federal government’s E-Verify system.

§  This website can be found at by clicking “Construction and Public Works” in the left navigation panel and then clicking on “Public works Employment Verification.”

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Building & Construction Trades Council

Thank you for visiting the web page of the Pennsylvania State Building & Construction Trades Council. The unionized construction industry is very unique, and we are proud to be the organization that leads the way when it comes to standing up for what is best for our members...and what is best for our communities.

Throughout our extremely large and diverse state, it is the members of the Pennsylvania Building Trades that create and maintain the infrastructure in the Commercial and Industrial Industries, which includes office buildings, hospitals, universities, schools, libraries, stadiums, bridges and highways, warehouses, power generation facilities, refineries and chemical plants that make our state such a wonderful place to live and do business. It is these same members of the Building Trades that tirelessly give back to their communities by volunteering their time to organizations that make life better for those less fortunate. We go beyond the call of duty to raise the standard of living for people in our communities.

The work of the unionized construction trades speaks for itself. Our apprenticeship training programs are second to none, and no one can compete with the level of skilled craftsmanship that our journeymen and women bring to the job site.
