Pennsylvania Building Trades Council praises State Senate approval of bill establishing state licensing of plumbing contractors; urges House passage - (5/6/2010)

For Immediate Release

The Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council today praised the State senate passage of SB 288, a bill that would create a State Board of Plumbing Contractors, and urged the State House of Representatives to pass the legislation. The bill would also establish minimum standards for individuals providing plumbing services in order to protect public health and safety.

Frank Sirianni, President of the Building and Construction Trades Council, noted that SB 288, sponsored by Senator Ted Erickson (R-26) and co-sponsored by Senator Tina Tartaglione (D-2), is a "good bi-partisan first step in recognizing the need for standards of performance in all construction trade occupations in the Commonwealth."

Sirianni said that state-established minimum standards for highly technical crafts like plumbing, combined with state support for apprenticeship training, will help to make sure that government funded building projects are completed on-time and under budget while maintaining community standards for working conditions and quality of workmanship in the private sector as well.

"We commend the State Senate for passing SB 288 because this legislation proves the position our organization has held for a long time that Pennsylvania needs statewide enforceable standards in the construction industry and especially for work funded with our tax dollars" said Sirianni. "We hope that the State House will recognize the importance of this legislation to the public health and pass it in a timely fashion."
