Huge Victory on PLAs! - (6/1/2012)

June 1, 2012

Dear State and Local Building Trades Leader:

Last night in the U.S. House of Representatives, and just several hours after the release of a report that demonstrated that the ABC was nothing more than an astro-turf "paper tiger," we achieved what can only be described as a momentous victory in the fight to protect public -sector PLAs.

By a margin of 218-198, with 34 Republicans joining 184 Democrats, the House of Representatives removed anti-PLA language from the FY 2013 Military Construction/VA appropriations bill that would have effectively limited the ability of the federal government to utilize PLAs.

Today, I am urging the appropriate state and local building trades councils to reach out to the following House Republicans and express your sincere thanks and appreciation for their willingness to stand strong with us in the face of incredible pressure:

1.Biggert
2.Buchanan
3.Capito
4.Cravaack
5.Diaz-Balart
6.Dold
7.Emerson
8.Gibson
9.Grimm

32.Turner (OH)

Finally, I want to thank each and every building trades council for your efforts to ensure that we had a strong vote turnout under a difficult scheduling scenario.  We have proven once again, that our reasonable, and bipartisan approach to politics, continues to pay dividends even under the most trying of circumstances.

This is a proud and defining moment for America's Building Trades Unions.

Thank you.

Sincerely and fraternally,

Sean McGarvey

President
